About Us

The Pavers story began in 1971 when Catherine Paver founded the company. She had big dreams of changing the world of footwear and a passion to provide comfortable and stylish shoes to all.

Starting small she sold shoes at village halls and homeware parties and was successful enough to open the first Pavers shop in Scarborough in 1981, where Catherine’s three sons joined the business. One of her sons, Stuart, ran the business as Managing Director for over 40 years, joined by his son Jason (Right in Picture) in 2016. As of September 2023 Jason Paver is now the Managing Director of Pavers Ltd, with Stuart (Left in Picture) moving to Chairman, taking the company in to 3rd generation of family run leadership.

From these modest beginnings, Pavers Shoes has grown to be a UK leader in today’s comfort footwear industry, with over 180 stores nationwide encompassing our newer acquired brands, Jones Bootmaker, Herring Shoes, Padders & Van Dal.

We are an ever-growing, highly profitable and independent family-run business with a strong balance sheet, employing over 1,800 people and remain acquisitive.

We were voted one of the Top 10 Employers in Retail in the UK in 2020 and were recognised as a 3* Employer with ‘World Class’ levels of workplace engagement by Best Companies in 2023. At Pavers we truly believe the talents, passion, and dedication of our employees are the reasons for our success.

In 2021 we became the first major retailer to achieve Carbon Neutral status and have proudly maintained this standard ever since. Championing sustainability is at the heart of everything that we do, and we’re committed to changing the future of retail for the better.

We strive for diversity of thinking across the business and believe strongly in supporting our local communities. In 2018 we donated over £2.2m to establish the Pavers Foundation, with the specific purpose of providing charitable grants for causes important to all our colleagues in the areas of health, education, and community. Every year Pavers donates 2% of its net profits to our Foundation, together with monies collected from the plastic carrier bag levy. The Foundation has donated over £1.8 million to date and continues to ‘Make a Difference’ with every pair sold.

Our People

We are passionate about providing comfort and happiness to our customers, and we make sure we employ people who also think this way.

We look for positive, enthusiastic, and customer-orientated individuals, and we provide great jobs in a supportive environment for them.

We know that without our colleagues there is no business, so we have created a work culture that promotes inclusivity, ambition, opportunity, and growth opportunities for all.

We always try and do the right thing by our people. We are dedicated to investing and developing our whole team as they form the foundation of our success and continuing growth.

Our colleagues benefit from in-house training, external development opportunities, and other routes to progress their careers and build their knowledge and skills. We encourage internal progression and can offer opportunities in stores and at our Distribution Centre and Head Office, and actively offer a move to Head Office/Distribution Centre incentive scheme to our store colleagues.

Pavers Academy

Pavers Academy is a branch of our Learning & Development function, focusing on a variety of areas, including job-focused learning and leadership development to provide clear pathways to support our colleagues in achieving successful careers.

We are continuously reviewing and adding new pathways to the Academy to ensure we provide our people with the skills, knowledge and mindset to deliver the best service and perfect products to our customers. This includes a wide range of mental and physical wellbeing courses and additional support that colleagues can access outside of the workplace. This has been a huge success in aligning employee goals and performance with that of the company.

We use a variety of methods to support development, which include, but are not limited to; Pavers Academy Online, face to face courses, apprenticeships, professional qualifications, and mentoring programmes.
